THE PROS AND CONS OF VIDEO GAMING

Video gaming can have its pros and cons. There are numerous studies and reasons that video games are good and other reasons why they are sometimes bad. Whether you like video games or not, gaming is very popular, according to the writers at pro con.org, “  97% of teens in the U.S. play video games.” Now let’s look at the pros and cons of gaming.

First the Pros. The first pro of video gaming is using

problem solving and logic. When you play a video game you sometimes have to think of a creative way to find a solution or complete a puzzle. Either it’s a final boss or level you have to complete you sometimes have to think of an “out of the box,” idea. This helps logical thinking and this helps to make you more creative.

The second pro is  helping hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. In a video game especially a shooter game you have to run and shoot at the same time. You have to keep track of where you’re aiming and where you’re running, an enemy might pop up out of nowhere and you will have to look at the screen and not the controller and press the right button. A gamer can not look at the controller and still press the right button at the same time.

The last pro is helping quick thinking and making fast decisions. This pro will probably not only be used in games but in the real world too. In life you might have to make a fast decision like if you’re plans get cancelled so you reschedule it. An article written at the University of Rochester, led by Daphne Bavelier, says that “games simulating stressful events such as those found in battle or action games could be a training tool for real-world situations.”

Now we will start with the cons. The first con is video games can cause addiction. Some people play video games to relax and connect with friends, but it can easily become an addiction. Studies have shown that video game addiction can lead to depression. Some people get a few hours of sleep from how much they are gaming.

Another con is violent behavior from video games. Most of the cons from video gaming is the violence. Children that play video games are more likely to have aggressive behavior or feelings. Also in 2018 an analysis showed that kids who played violent video games like “Call Of Duty,” were more likely to get sent to the principal's office or to start a fight.

In the end video games can be good for kids and there can be some bad sides. What are your thoughts on video games?

  2. I enjoyed how your writing informed me on how videogames can help with things such as logic skills. I have noticed before that some people who do play video games, do have more aggressive personalities, and can become angry at the slightest things. How do you think video games can create an addiction?

    1. Many video games can cause addiction by making your body release the chemical called dopamine when you complete a round or an achievement in a video game. Dopamine makes you feel good, so the game keeps you playing to reales that chemical and feel good.
