Ruby Bridges

Ruby Nell Bridges was the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on November 14, 1960.

The significant event was that she was picked to be the first African-American child to be in an all white school. Ruby’s birth year coincided with the US Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka Kansas, which ended racial segregation in public schools. Since she had the birth year that the Supreme court picked she got to be the first black person in an all white school. Ruby got picked to be the first black person to go to an all white school, and she took the chance and went.

Going to school there wasn’t easy as most whites did not want her there. But what she did changed history and she is an unsung hero.

  1. There is a lot of good information in this blog. I remember learning about Ruby Bridges in 3rd grade. How do you think Ruby felt about being in a school most everyone didn't want her in?

    1. She felt left out and lonely. That nobody wanted her, but she was determined to make a change and she would do whatever it takes.
